 Cigarettes

Blissful sticks of hazy yellow dreams;
Socially nowadays, everyone screams.
Hiding in the alleyways out of sight;
Looking as you puff to the left, then right.

I can remember the days when I started;
It was thought to be cool, my lips parted.
I can remember that first pack… cough;
Addiction soon followed, all bets were off.

Twenty four years of abuse to my lungs;
Seeing that yellow coating on my tongue.
Sick as a dog one spring, I couldn't smoke;
I had finally taken my very last toke.

For twelve years now I have tried to redeem;
Workouts, running, spinning, my exercise regime.
My lungs are now clear, but I have sown the seed;
If someday I reap, I have no argument to plead.

The hardest thing in my life that I have ever done,
Was put down that last Salem, but in my soul I won.
Success is measured in the breath I draw each day;
Cigarettes are in my past, yet I continue to pray.
