 words from the soul

For those we call soldiers

Eyes vacant; homeless makeshifts;
We look away as if those eyes
Are non-existent;
Afraid they may be our eyes;
Sent to war watching death
Once, twice or just
A reoccurrence;
God forsaken their cause
To honor country;
Friends die too
Perhaps their prayer
Close my eyes too-
Continue anyway
Losing their soul
Hiding is the course
They walk home with
Doors close
Their world is different
Arms once embracing
Now closing memories
That held them
When their eyes saw death
Too many times
Homeless shifts
In gutters and railroad trestle
They lost their mind
Our eyes turn away
In fear
We might see death
In their eyes
Repeating too many times
