When Every Single Hope is Shattered

Skyrocketing unemployment
makes you a statistic.
Ha ha.
It feels shameful.
It feels abusive.
Why is the world against you?
Does New York seem so cold?
In effect, you're homeless.
I'm here to tell you.
Right, you need to think of welfare.
The construction jobs have dried up,
the warehouses do not want you at forty-seven.
Your friends who have loved you
are having problems of their own.
They cannot afford you in their apartments.
A helpful society has become unmerciful.
So ruthless.
You cannot wait a long haul.
Job centers are overwhelmed.  This is 2009.
No, there are no brother's keepers.
Everything you have relied on has withered, faded.
It's difficult to believe there isn't another angle.
People alienate one another to create your situation.
Your heart, so full of love, disintegrates.
Do you still want friendship
when the selfless impulses of friends
become necessity?
I'm curious about that.
Well, walk a mile in their moccasins.
You've decided to go to your older sister in Texas.
Good luck.
