 Battle of the Bulge
Downloading a group of pictures from my vacation;
I was mortified by what I saw when looking at myself.
I am a workout freak, fully dedicated to my health;
Only to see that I am losing the battle of the bulge.
How did these extra two inches come on my waist?
Have I not been vigilant? Diet and exercise is my mantra.
Yet, slowly, almost without notice, creeping into the picture;
Flab around my middle, this is the battle of the bulge.
Redoubling my effort, attempting to work even harder;
Cutting out those delicious sugary sweet treats that I love.
Running another mile or two, pushing and shoving back;
I will not be defeated in this battle of the bulge.
Smiling, looking into the mirror at my paranoia's reflection;
I see that maybe, I am ok, maybe I am too hard on myself.
I do fine for a 57 year old man, now embracing what I see.
My soul signs an armistice with my body in the battle of the bulge.
