 My Protection
Never one of those Dad's to sit on the porch drinking a beer;
Anytime my daughter had a new adventure, I was always near.
Cruising along the furniture before her first step, chasing the cat;
Sitting close by in protection in case she falls and goes splat.
Her first adventure on her bike without the training wheels;
Running beside her, clearing out the danger from her heels.
Behind the wheel of my Jeep she sat, learning how to drive;
Teaching her the skills that one needs, enabling her to survive.
Then came mistakes in judgment, one after another, time after time;
My head is swirling, trying so hard to steer her far away from crime.
Unable to stop her from returning to the same mistakes again;
Advice I can give, but no longer is her life directly within my domain.
Exasperated, frustrated; totally out of solutions to her issues;
Out of my hands, all I can do now is offer a box of Kleenex tissues.
What now will be the course of her reeling life without direction;
I cannot say, but I know that she is no longer under my protection.
