 Weekend Before My Senior Year
The first Saturday of early autumn, crispness in the air;
Kickoff on college campuses, the sounds of fight songs.
Remembering a fresh school year and the promises to myself;
A clean slate before me, a desire to finally achieve my potential.
Looking into my future with a landscape full of opportunities;
It is the beginning of the my senior year here in the fall of 1969.
College is on my horizon, I must establish those good study habits;
Working every day in order to keep my head above the waters.
My last wrestling season is approaching with hope of the crown;
Only one match away from the championship last year, only one.
God, I am excited; I can't wait to put my nose to the grindstone;
I love this moment, believing it will be established in my memory forever.
Confidence is surging into my very soul, hope springs eternal, it is said;
Yet, lingering in the background are the gremlins that have bound me.
Free for the moment, on guard against attack; I am going to survive;
I am vigilant sitting in my watchtower, the weekend before my senior year.
