In Greek mythology Pandora was used as a pawn to open the box. She was created by Zeus and the other gods of Mount Olympus as punishment when Prometheus stole fire from Mount Olympus and presented it to man.
Pandora unwittingly opens the box and releases pestilence on mankind, but shuts the lid and traps hope inside.
Created there on Mount Olympus
beauty beyond compare fair of face.
Would that Hephaistos your creator
taken the time to add more grace.
Ah, Pandora plaything of Zeus
and the other mighty ancient Gods
caught within their endless conflicts
pawn of Zeus, how your head nods.
Wife of Epimetheus, how he loved you
how he adored his darling wife.
Deceived into releasing all life's plagues
sent to cause mankind hardship and strife.
Holdfast fair maiden of the God's making!
Do not open the box! Beware your quest!
Yet you do not hear the warning.
All horror flees, but hope is laid to rest.
Oh mother of troubles and sorrow
releaser of pestilence, misery, and death
how could they use you in their game
one wrought by the Creator's breathe?
