MY GIFT

He came to me in my dream last night
This angel, this  man among men
He told me this was the very last time
He could never return again.

He brought with him a package of notes
For a book I was commissioned to write.
It was a new and special assignment
He brought to me in the middle of the night.

The book told the story of a magical love
A love that was buried in pain.
Yes, the book told a story of a love that was lost
Lost and never to be found again.

He told me that I must forget this love
Look at me, he said, what do you see?
I'm a shadow of the man you used to know
For your sake and mine, please honeybun, let go!

I took the package of notes from him
My memories of a once lovely day
Then I reached out to take him in my arms
But he had already faded away.
I looked up in the Heavens and began to cry
There was nothing in the dark and dreary sky.
So I told my angel in the sky no longer blue
Milt, this is forever, I will always love you.
