Songs of Life

An Irish Pearl

Your eyes held me trapped, azure pools of mirth,

But in your innocence your smile swallowed my heart.

I did not ask, but I knew what my heart was thinking.

Still there was no mercy in the timing for the old should know better.

As I stared at those oceans that were your beckoning eyes,

I fell into those pheromone fathoms, and then stayed unbidden.

Hiding between the currents I kept swimming deeper,

Deeper than I should,  hoping for the peace and calm.

Contentment was to be had in those depths.

My head spun and my chest screamed from the pressure.

I longed for a breadth needing air, but I was not suffocating,

I was smothering from guilt, and thoughts of unrequited love.

Then I realized it could not be, and I retreated to the surface.

Love took me to a realm where I was no longer welcomed,

But I am thankful for the visit even if it caused me to

forever sit on the sands listening to the surf lapping,

Dashing my hopes of returning to the sea.
