I long for the past
If I entertain the notion I'm caught up in my thoughts Overcome by my emotion I feel such a sadness When life overwhelms me I long for a simpler time When my mind was at ease When I could believe That all I had to do Was picture in my head Things to look forward to I was so positive then But I was very naive Never had to worry What it meant to grieve I knew time would pass Whether it felt fast or slow The pace didn't matter I knew I had to grow Searching for direction It becomes a give and take Using what works best And learning from mistakes Then one day you realize You're no longer small The child you use to be Isn't there at all And if you look back To see where you've been How one door would close And you'd start over again Can you recall the day When you were on your own The day you realized You learned to be alone You had to be responsible To find meaning each day No one to hold your hand No one could pave your way Your parents set in motion A direction they thought best Until they felt it was time For you to do the rest It quickly came upon you Before anything else Making your own decisions Depending on yourself I miss my Mom and Dad They way we use to be When I was a child And they took care of me They made me feel so loved Made sure I was safe Made sure my needs were met Whatever it would take I sure miss those days When I didn't worry About growing up I was in no hurry Your parents gave you life Loved you with all their heart Hoped you learned from The lessons you were taught They prepared you for the day That came no matter what Their most important job was To make sure you grew up We all become adults But that still doesn't mean I don't long for the day When they took care of me copyright 2020 Zimshall Vote for this poem
