Fish Kill



(just recently, Philippines is hit by "fish kill" particularly in the provinces of Batangas and Pangasinan. For this, i am moved to write.)

Down the quiet,
murky waters, they arise,
unsteadily.
swim aimlessly.
twist.turn.
In circles.
Ten thousand ripples
from little mouths,
striving
for little oxygen
in thin air.

Cloudy, sunken
eyes.
wavering, pale
gills.
foul smell.
As the moon treads
the wary skies,

Death is not wearing black
but white, red,
and khaki shirts with denim
pants hovering by
the pens.
In grimace, wondering-
where to cast
nets again or worst
still,
hope dies-
along with them.
