Transcendental Sonnet #1474: Mousie and Her Million Mice Behind

for Lindsey my biographer and for the bullied everywhere

I used to have imaginary friends
Of the unimagined hardly any
Like Mousie and her million mice behind

Protecting their means preserving my ends
From bullies who might stop us on the street
On the way home from school or the unkind
In general of which there were many

She was a rubber cat toy with a bell
And just in case she also had a squeak
By which she spoke to my encouragement
Mousie solidarity so to speak

Tucked in my pocket no bully could tell
Mousie went with me wherever I went
A million mice behind us should we meet
