BRIANNA ART  (Mom's song)




It had been a great weekend. Rafting down the Yakima
river. The family was together. All twenty three but one
In the rafts. Dear Staci ran the truck from point to point.
Picked up the riders the perfect host. Tomorrow leaving for
Canada. What a rush dad was competing in a triathlon. Disaster;
Dad had flown Mom was driving the motor home. Grandma and
the kids in a car following until Mom was more comfortable.
She never saw the car until it crossed the lines and it was
too late. The motor home up in flames. Mom's last words, Oh my God!"
The Newspapers said a migrant worker was killed in
the accident. Staci got her Master's at Boise State. Soft spoken,
pride of her mother, at the funeral migrant workers did come to
the funeral. UN-beknown even to the family she knew these
street people by name. Took weekly food and clothing to the
homeless campsites.

I wrote the poem at the cemetery. Brother and sister just
children releasing balloons in the air. A decade later Brianna
in college put my poem to art. This is the poem and the art
returned to me. Art in the eyes of a child. Today Brianna has
followed her mother's footsteps. Mom graduated from Washington
State. Brother and Sister are now at the same college. Dad is
no longer competing he is a school teacher and coach of swimmers.
On a clear blue day we look for Staci and below her wings her pride.
