ONE SINGLE FLOWER
" My defensive machinegun bunker on the perimeter of the airfield"
" A Rice Paddy Herb Plant"
In war we see so much destruction
Those remnants of battles fought
The once peaceful place destroyed
For as war comes the beauty goes
Once lush green plants & flowers
Long since disappeared from view
What does war ever solve for mankind
A last resort after all words failed
Sometimes we are left to just wonder
Was it all caused by one man's ego
In some cases the reasons are clear
It's twisted and warped individuals
Who decide to take over the world
With no regard for other nations
Like Hitler & the Emperor of Japan
Who thought they'd just take it all
There have been many who caused wars
And the devastation that had followed
And so it was in South Vietnam too
Where Ho Chi Minh wanted everything
From the north he invaded the south
Killing thousands with his own army
When I arrived in November of 1968
There had been many battles fought
The once beautiful landscape scarred
From Bombs, rockets & Agent Orange
Turned everything into a wasteland
And yet after all of these battles fought
In front of my defensive machinegun bunker
One single flower still stood up so proudly
The sole survivor of all this devastation
Oblivious to all that had happen there
This single flower was simply a miracle
It had refused to be a victim of this war
Standing there so proudly in the sunshine
A single reminder of the beauty once there
