Dead Sounds of Play
Remember when the sun beamed
When the clouds seemed to kiss
Your face because you jumped and gleamed
Ah, I remember this
The kites were soaring high
The children laughed with care
They never saw the darkness
They didn't know it was there
See the swing sets are now empty
The merry-go-round is dead
The seesaw occupies a lone child
"Come back, Daddy" They sadly said.
The slides are pooled with tears
The jump ropes are bloodily stained
The rules have disappeared
Monsters now play in the game
Truth or Dare is beyond fair
Jacks become pens and knives
Cards and dice turn joy to glares
Watch them gamble death and life
The cheers begin to eerily fade
Small buckets and smiles are kicked
Hop-Scotch now thrown with blades
Six cuts up on the wrist
The jungle bars each have a noose
Sad eyes watch the ropes dangle and twirl
Name calling the new Duck Duck Goose
For every hurt boy and girl
Pebbles in shoes and lead in hearts
Leaves them all to feel the pain
Marbles roll off into the dark
As the little hope wanes
Recall when the grass was green
When the sunset meant a new day
Hands dirty, but minds clean
"Again, Daddy!" Some would say.
...
Remember when the sun rose
We didn't doubt our happiness
We smiled, drew, tagged, and froze
Ah, I remember this
