What does it mean to be a Democrat in the 21st century? If you consider yourself a liberal this question is for you. If you are a registered member of the Democratic Party then of course it also applies to you as well. If you celebrated on Election Day, 2008, listen closely and if you advocate and agree with the current US foreign policy and the actions being taken overseas then you definitely don't want to miss this. This letter was written to address and to bring attention to the current state of The Union under Democratic Party leadership. It is a letter about devotion and it is a letter about betrayal. It is a letter about a party with a very sordid past that through the rigors of activism has made sweeping reforms but now stands on the verge of a very dismal and unprogressive future. The party of Roosevelt and the party of Kennedy as it's often called is seen by most of its supporters as the "anti-war" party (though this is highly debatable) but lately what we have seen is a complete 180 degree turn from this position. Currently what we are witnessing is Democrats acting like a bunch of war happy Republicans who for decades have been the ones (whether justly or unjustly) mostly associated with wars and saber rattling. What we are finding is that the Democrats are just as hawkish as their Republican counterparts in Congress. We saw the party come into power and be handed down a war that was subsequently expanded under their leadership. And now just like the Bush regime they are trying everything within their power to justify their war of liberal aggression. In the past when things didn't go according to plan they'd simply shift the blame onto someone else but at this point that has been deemed to be no longer acceptable. The time for excuses is over. Democrats, you made a conscious decision and a conscious effort to be part of this war. You chose to join in the fight and now you own the fight. It is yours and solely yours. You were left holding the gun and now you refuse to lay it down. You were considered the ones against the war and now you have become the war. You've become in fact, a "Democratic" party whose actions are the antithesis of the word democratic and you should be ashamed to address yourselves as such until your party has changed its undemocratic behavior. You are waging war, causing destruction and wreaking havoc around the world, leaving a blood trail that is continuing to grow all under the leadership of a man that you thought would unify the international community instead of divide it. Your party's aggression has surpassed its predecessor's. You now seem to have an insatiable appetite for blood. It's funny how you appear to have contempt for the gun but at the same time you love the damage that it inflicts upon your enemies or those that you perceive to be your enemies. So as long as you are not holding the gun you feel no guilt for the countless lives that are taken by others in your name and for your cause, getting your kicks through what is called vicarious violence. The question I ask is do you have no shame? Where is your humanity? Have you forgotten the meaning and the definition of the word liberal? Liberalism is defined as a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty and equality. It means to liberate one's self or others from oppression and bigotry, not act like an oppressor and a bigot. The party seems to have forgotten this very basic principle. This is where the line has been blurred. You were all up in arms against the previous administration and its authoritarian policies but now you seem to have fallen asleep against the current one that is operating under the same agenda. You were against the war back then but you love the war now and have in fact started more wars and committed more atrocities to date. You now cover more fronts, have broken more international laws and have ignored the sovereignty of more nations than the Bush administration ever dreamed of. How could a party that's supposed to be the most representative of the country as far as race, creed and religion are concerned allow itself to be portrayed in such a murderous and malicious way throughout the world? What happened to tolerance? What happened to those Americans who used to be brave enough to say no to an unjust war? Once again I say, what happened to your humanity? Instead of the liberators you have become the captors. And now in your ignorance and pride you continue to follow with blind allegiance even when that voice inside keeps telling you to turn back. No matter how many drone strikes occur or how many innocent lives are taken you still stand fast. You still remain diligent and you remain ready, ready to defend that which is indefensible. What happened to your voices of dissent? What is the reason for this war is peace and peace is war philosophy that you have adopted? What words have you to explain this monster that you've created? As a concerned citizen I'd really like to know. I think these are very fair and legitimate questions that deserve a very honest and legitimate response. In closing, I ask that you reject the silly notion of injecting American style democracy around the globe (it's not going to happen), denounce this highly destructive brand of neo-colonialism and disembark from this endless path of war. Reclaim your humanity and last but not least reclaim your identity because it's grown a bit confusing in recent years trying to tell you apart from the Neo-cons. So in short, I guess what I'm trying to say is, Will the real liberals please STAND UP?
