This week has been remembering the past. I have spoken often of a poor childhood.
But there were good things. I always lived around the Puget Sound and water. Each
year went to the Puyallup fair. We did both this weekend. Although as a boy I always
brought home a turtle or a chameleon. Actually one year it was snowball a white mouse.
Did we clear out the bus when he jumped out of the box. Poor snowball is somewhere
being chased by a cat. "No sir, that was not my mouse." Yes I did not always tell the
truth as a child. But the ladies were pointing at me and we were thrown off the bus
trying to find Snowball. My Chameleon was named Rainbow. I was called Punky. Don' you just
love nicknames that do not fit. I was skinny as a rail.
The Turtle, Herby disappeared one day. Herby could not travel
fast. Looked every day for Herby. Sold my bed one day and while tearing it apart there
was Herby in the bedpost. Not a pretty sight after being missing ten years. This year
I skipped bringing home pets besides my Brother in Law.
A week earlier we went on a boat ride. Traveled down and under the Tacoma Narrows bridge.
on the left side the golf course being built for the US Open. Two things about the bridge.
Years ago it replaced the famous Galloping Gerty. In the forties it collapsed and
dropped to the water far below. My Father, only time I well call him that was one of
the last vehicles to cross over in ninety mile winds driving a coal truck. One of the only
jobs he ever held other than drinking and that was probably why he was one of the last
to cross over. It reminded me as a young boy racing in boats all over the sound. The time
was were coming back from Vendovi Island, A Doctor friend of our owned an island. Can you
imagine owning your own island and us kids were caretakers. We would motor around in outboards
and bring supplies to the real caretaker.
One day sunshining when we left it was turning stormy. We were hunting rabbits not looking
at the weather, nor monster water beasts and following on each side were Killer whales. In those day we only knew about Moby Dick and
whales were a scary things having recently read ++"Moby Dick", surrounding your boat on all sides. I had a twenty two rifle,
collectors item today and wondered if I should shoot one. It was black and stormy and the
skies turning evil and they kept us on course. We were scared and lost. Suddenly there
was the dock and home the whales lead us in. Today I love whales. But on our ride all we
saw around the boat was seals and Salmon. Not a bad thing unless you are a Salmon. Someday
I well tell you about racing Hydroplanes. The boy that day with me became a hydroplane racer.
I was at warp speed and the boat did a "360" under me and i found myself unconscious. Now I
am not dumb. Even then I wanted to die of old age. I gave up hydroplaning and joined the
military. If I was going to die it was for my country.Happy whatever year Monica, Happy anniversy
ary Terry and your lovely princess and take time to remember those who have past. Blessed
are the Angels/dandy
**"Moby Dick" is what I call my could friend Richard, my Brother in law is Theodora for his
feminine side. Four sisters and Theodora.
