Father's day: I remember Mom
Mom died very young at "54", on her birthday
On the death certificate she died of Cancer
Reality she died of alcoholism and abuse
I remember the days well
"Dandy, your Stepdad and I have been married 19 years
I love this man he was my salvation of years of abuse."
"Mom what are you trying to say?"
"We would like you to arrange a twentieth Anniversary party."
"No problem."
"There is one problem Dandy. It has to be in the next three months."
"What are you saying Mom?"
"I have Cancer, Dandy I have been seeing a Doctor for several months
At most he says I have three months to live."
The party was arranged and she seemed to be improving
She and my stepdad joined our Church.
She asked me to arrange my stepdad's Baptism* and we did so!
She was happy she seemed to be in remission and then--
"I have gather you together I have some bad news."
The Doctor was saying the words with tears in his eyes,
"Your Mom had been a special patient to me. I have grown
to love her as if she was my own Mom. She came to me when we
first learned of her Cancer. She offered her body to be used
in any aggressive attempts to cure this deadly disease."Nothing
you can do is any worse than my first husband as already done."
And it worked for awhile. It was a painful procedure and as
the Doctor said there was so much with her permission he could
do legally. Lately she has been having uncontrolled nosebleeds
Thinning her blood was part of that putting her in regression
He nose so badly broken by your Father we had to discontinue
the blood thinner used we could not cauterize the bleeding
Bottom line and this hurts me to say I have grown to love this woman
Your Mom has two weeks to live If I were you I would be with her
every minute." Every night I went straight from my job and stayed
with her until I had to go to work. My wife and stepdad took
the day shift. One night it was strange. I felt a draft in the room
The curtains moved as if someone had come in a window.
I went beyond the curtains to see if a window had been opened.
There was no draft as the Hospital windows were sealed shut
Mom was talking and I heard her saying, "Jesus", had come for her.
Suddenly she stopped, I could feel the pressence she said,
"Jesus has come for me. Dandy come over and give me a kiss
I want you to go to the Nurses station and tell them your Mom died"
"You have never looked better but I did as I was told and
I ran--the Nurse ran a head of me, and the door was closed,
After a half hour it opened and he greeted me, "Your Mom was
right and she has died. Lovely woman was talking to Jesus
Do you want a moment with her?" I looked and there was a Halo above
her head and I said, "Don't need one she let me know she is with Jesus."

*My Stepdad died early this year. He was a hundred years old. Mom had
him Baptized. All his life he was a Steelworker. Foreman of major building
projects, the Idaho dome, He walking on thin ledge alone install the railing
outside the Space Needle. a gruff old man. His language salty. Not a believer.
From thetime Mom died he took to the Church. At the old folkes home he was known
to give sermons. From his salty words came God Bless you. Jesus loves you
and if I honor anyone on Father's day it is Grandpa and this man Will G Bisyak
as my Father. He and I removed the Devil from Mom's world. He was only five foot
four my father six foot nine. He took the shotgun from me and went after my
Father. My Father would never bother us again. Later he told me he put the gun
to his head. Made a pledge, Started with if you ever---!
