 Contemporary poetry by Dan Donlan

Whoda thunk it!
The little boy in the tiny bedroom
Being loaded into an ambulance
Mom holding his hand
It was Mother's day
He had given Mom a special gift
Kitchen table thrown out the window
With the dishes Mom got on Mom's day
From money saved bean picking
Mowing lawns and pennies saved
By her son
This is why they sat on appleboxes
"Who is your boyfriend?" The drunk roared!
By the man who never came home
Cheating on Mom
From the bedroom
Shared with his sister
This boy came out and challenged the monster
a 9by12 bedroom
This was the day he could not stay protected
The police had arrived
To take Dad away freezing in winter
Broke out every window in drunken rage
and the boy, (me) ended in a coma
It would be the last time he would touch me
or Mom squeezed tennis balls every day
shadow boxed the wall for a rematch
But on that Mother's day
The windows were boarded up
Police took him to jail me and Mom hospital
Stayed that way until stepdad fixed them
Voted the boy most likely not to succeed
Told so by the girl of his dreams
"You will end up a drunk like your Dad!"
Took on dad eleven to protect Mom
In a coma riding in ambulance with Mom
With broken nose Mom you were beside me praying

I was not there for Graduations
High school I was working nights
College they mailed my Associates degree
I was working two jobs to support my familly
And taking night classes
Now comes the pride
All my children college graduates or well be
Grandson Number five graduates high school
With a 3.9 despite hockey practice every night
My son Wazzu undergrad and Georgetown Law school
Married to Doctor of Medicine Georgetown Medical school
Three Grandkids graduates from college
Fourth a Junior going to study three months in Italy
The youngest about to Graduate from High school
Colleges recruiting him for grades and hockey
My pride the work ethic passed on
Moms day:
Mom's pride was I served my country
National Guard still in high school
A medical corpsman: Us AirForce,"My son a Doctor!"
Mom never saw me graduate any school
She was working to  support her family
Nor did she know her Grandkid graduations
Mom died so young at 54
But I know her pride from Heaven
An Angel looking down
Yes Mom, I was voted most likely not to succeed
My family has made us proud
Why I mention you--without your love I would be nothing!
The little boy crying in that shack
Was in every way so close to giving up
Happy Mom's day and another Graduation coming soon
You never saw one graduation but you were there an Angel
guiding us to not give up a dreams
