 Contemporary poetry by Dan Donlan

Lazy Susan
Kick the cans
Hide and seek
Rumble seats
Knuckle fights
Girls in tights
Playing marbles
With stealies
Vinal was King
Then came Elvis
Innocent feelies
In drive in movies
Things that were groovy
Ugly girls
But you were not choosy
Bowling allies
"56 Chevy"
You had a "50" Ford
But it was a convertable
OK, mine a "56" Desoto
Power windows
Push button transmission
Making out at the levy
Sure she was a little heavy
Playing football in the park
Street lights getting dark
Neighborhood pool shark
Dick' s had best Hamburgers
and surely the best shakes
Drugs were aspirin
Surely not Heroin
Doing drugs
Known as doppers
Bunch of dumb jokers
Really sick needle pokers
Packed in like sardines
Girls were not all wearing jeans
Your date a little cranky
No hanky panky
Mom made something called "Shipwreck"
In tinfoil I suspect
OK, you saved gum foil for war effort
And you were saving pennies
Five you had a nickel
Corner store buy you a pickle
A penny a day for a month
Would get you a ticket to the movies
Television was round in a box
Only Dad decided who watched he had a lock
If you were stoned
You were hit with a rock
Neighborhood pickup baseball
Everyone played
Who was chosen by the Captains
Girls were girls
Boys were boys
Those not chosen were girls
Bring back the fifties and sixties
