 Contemporary poetry by Dan Donlan

We used to refer to our State as God' country
Not to be trashed by homeless drug addicts
What was once beauty surrounded in trash!
Now considered as Northern California
or lately the Northern border of Mexico
Tighten your borders Canada

I grew up in what in the fifties
We refereed to Seattle as God's country
Mt Rainier a beacon shining from the East
The Space Needle an attraction
Throwing Salmon on Pikes street market
A treat and now the area is
Surrounded with sleeping bums and Heroin addicts
It isn't only the fish leaving a smell
From the Cascades Mt Rainer was peaking
Then the druggees and bums took over the space
A blight on the human race
Outdoor sports and living in peace
Sure there was rain often leaking
Neighbors cared and shared doors open
All colors mixed and were Sisters and Brothers
From the Womb of the Same Mothers
It started slowly in came the strangers
At first we did not recognize the dangers
Crime moved up a hundred percent
The storms vultures came from the South
In the Northwest we welcomed all visitors
After all the native Indians let us in
California sent to us their unwanted
We would really wish they would take them back
Soon graffiti and gang warfare killings
And what were they fighting over?
The drugs and low life they were bringing in
Parading in the streets, "Black lives matter!"
It wasn't  locals doing the killings
the shootouts were gangs against gangs
And dare I say it Blacks against blacks
The same gangs that came from California

But further south they came from Mexico
Seeking places to sell their ugly drugs--marijuana
What a bunch of slugs!--then every countries unwanted
Black lives matter all lives matter
OK, the restaurant became a favorite watering hole
But they brought in drugs, Marijuana thugs
No, drugs and illegal Immigrants we no wanna
But it's too late!
Today I went to my long visited Safeway store
I could not let my wife shop alone
Every unseat bench a days sleeping home
Begging all day and doping all night
What is happening is just not right
Up and down the street they were holding signs
"Homeless need help" should have read help me buy dope."
Our outside born Gay Mayor legalized drugs
Brought in the boys, girls, undecided from San Francisco
The kicker--My local Safeway advertises to be a
---a free Heroin needle site--free Heroin site for shooting up
For the taxpayers and these are not taxpayers--
A thirteen percent raise in taxes to pay for immigrants.
God is filling the Earth with tears
And my dear Burien home is a drive by in fears
The inhabitants are carrying stolen guns or spears
Day is turning to night a time for us living in fright
It isn't about black or white cops
It is about the pure influence of the drug culture
