     “It’s not a Date”

She had a date
though she refused
to call it that
“We’re just going hiking”
she would say
he is a friend
of a friend
we met
at some minor
get together
“I like to hike”
“And so does he”
“That’s all”
she says
throwing in a shrug
at the end
to help show
it’s no big deal.
But there is
an edge
of excitement
in her voice
she can’t quite
mask
“Yea”
She says
“He’s a couple of years older”
“Than me”
bringing him up again
on her own
“He has had”
“A few bad breaks”
“But he’s a really cool guy”
smiling a little too much
as she speaks
for me not to
notice
“But it’s not a date”
“Some other friends are”
“Going to meet us their”
Unsure,
If she’s trying to,
convince me
or herself
it’s not a date,
“I don’t have time”
“Or want a relationship”
“I like my time alone”
“We both just like to hike”
“”It’s not a date”
she says
as she continues to
give me
all this unsolicited
information
“OK then”
I say,
“It’s my first weekend off”
“In months”
she says
“It’s hard to find someone”
“To go hiking with”
feeling pretty confident
she proved her case
though no one
asked her
to do so,
me
starting to think
I’m not really
the one
she is trying
to convince.
My work day over
I walk by her
on my way out
“Have fun hiking”
“On your date”
I tell her
“It’s not a date”
she says
as she starts
rebuilding
her defense
to my remark
reissuing
the same statements
as before,
I just smile
tell her
I’ll see you Monday
and say to myself
“I think it’s a date”
she just doesn’t
know it yet…
