     “Act of Kindness”

She felt ambushed,
everything was going
so well
it was Friday
two hours left
to push through
and her work day
would be over
till next Monday
morning
her mind was spinning
with an endless cascade
of possibilities
that lay before her
for this weekend,
she had an
inner spirit
that sparkled
in her work
and especially
her eyes
she was quite bashful
but once you earned
her trust
she unleashed a smile
that alone
could captivate
your full attention,
but she did have
one glaring flaw
she was much too
kind,
he had come up
behind her
as she was
glancing at
her cell phone
for the time
counting the minutes
till her freedom
was won
“So”
“Got any plans”
“For the weekend?”
he said
as he popped out
in front of her
she takes a step back
surprised at his
unannounced appearance
and answered
“Nothing yet”
unaware he was
laying the ground work
for a follow-up
question
“Great”
he says,
as she turns
to face the
headlights
of the on coming
truck
“Would you go out”
“With me”
“Saturday night?”
paralyzed
in the light
of his question
she can only reply
with a feeble
“sure”
and with that
she hears
the sound
of the horn
from the truck
as it speeds by
dragging
her once promising
weekend
behind it,
she settled into
the fact
she now had
plans
for Saturday night
with a nice
enough guy
just not one
she wanted too
sacrifice
a Saturday night
for,
but her kindness
wouldn’t allow
her
to say
no,
she still had
so much
innocence
about her
unaware
just how much
of her true
beauty
was showing
through,
it was just a
date
on a Saturday
night
but soon
she won’t be
able
to deny
what all the boys
already see,
just how incredibly
beautiful
the girl behind
the bashful
smile
will be…
