Narcissism vs. Altruism

Original Contemporary Poetry by author, Jean Parr

"Narcissism vs. Altruism"

Can we be friends?
Can we be lover's?
I wish the answer were simple, like looking through a lens
Unfortunately, it's complex, especially when he doesn't realize his place on the narcissistic continuum, which needs to be uncovered

I know my place...I am so far on the opposite end of the continuum that I am prey to basically anyone who wants to take advantage of me
We could never have a symbiotic relationship because the giving was one sided, he didn't adhere to the gameplan
When he needed me, I dropped everything to be there for him, I did not flee
When I needed him, he ran

In reality, he is weak and I am strong because I have to deal with the aftermath of chaos left in his wake
To forgive is divine
Well, f*** that...break my heart once, shame on you, break my heart twice, shame on me...I can't believe I even baked you a cake
You couldn't give me what I needed, not because I was lacking, but because you are damaged and left me alone on the front line

I don't forgive you
I see through you

*Altruists beware
Narcissists will exploit, manipulate and control
They are unable to care
You will help, love, and accept until you are caught and so wrapped up in their lies and deceit that you spiral into their black hole
