     “The Gift”

He just wanted
to have
someone to
like
to be able
to do something
nice
and unexpected
for
if only to
try and retrieve
that lost feeling
of giving
that made him
feel
all special
inside,
but he seemed
to pervert
that simple act
he had found
a way
to turn a
token gift
into a minor
threat
making her think
his offering
was more of
a way
for him to
gain
some kind of
advantage
over her
only seeing a
trap
hidden in his
smile
instead of the
kindness
he thought it
portrayed,
he couldn’t
find a way
to explain
to her
the gift was
more for him
than for her
how do you
say
I have no
one
to share the
act of giving
with
nobody
to accept
his small
pitiful gestures
then returning
to him
in kind
some much
needed
human contact,
she only saw
the gift as
a feeble attempt
at a roundabout
way
for him
to try and be
a small part
of her world
but she had
no need
for one more
stranger
trying to buy
a way in
to become part
of her in-crowd
of people
already following
after her
as she went
through her
life,
how dare he
think
he could just
buy a ticket
and go to the
front
of the friendship
line
each gift
redeemable
for one week
of semi friendly
time spent
with her,
maybe
if he had
found a way
to explain his
feelings
she wouldn’t
have been
forced
to build protective
walls
around her life
to keep her
safe
from his
trolling
for friends,
but he didn’t
know how to
explain
much of anything
when it came
to her
he just stood
before her
with a God
awful smile
hanging off
his face
and without
a word
he shoved a
gift
in her direction
hoping to
provoke
a favorable
response
though not
really sure
what he hoped
that response
would be,
but still
he wondered
maybe
deep down
he knew
what he wanted
from her
and was lying
to himself
and anyone else
that would
listen
that he was
really trying
to buy a
change
in the way
she felt about
him
it wouldn’t be
the first time
he got caught
burying the
truth
in a rarely
traveled part
of his mind
and then
pretending
that truth
never really
existed,
now
unable to
scale the barriers
she constructed
round her world
to ever be
able to stand
close enough
to her again
so that he
can experience
that unique
individuality
that she stamps
across each
word
she speaks
before placing
them
out in the air
to be heard,
lost to him
now
within her walls
is that ability to
openly gaze
into her
unprotected
eyes
letting their
colors
resonate
into his mind
as her smile
brightens
an otherwise
dark day,
maybe she
was right
to push him
over the edge
of her personal
space
he didn’t really
have much to
offer her
anyways,
expect for
some stupid
gift
she didn’t
even want
in the first place…
