A living stone rejected by men,
Chosen and precious unto God;
As the cornerstone as of then,
For the church to honor and laud.
You yourselves are like living stones,
A spiritual house being built;
Stronger and sturdy than your bones,
Righteously being free of guilt.
For being a holy priesthood,
For a spiritual sacrifice;
Through Jesus Christ as understood,
Nothing in this world to entice.
God has laid in Zion a stone,
A cornerstone that is precious;
Be not ashamed if you condone,
A cornerstone laid for justice.
You are to honor who believe,
But for anyone who does not;
The rejection will then deceive,
If false idols are being sought.
A stone of stumbling in the dark,
A rock that you may take offense;
Since you disobey to embark,
Your fate to be a consequence.
But you are of the chosen race,
Royal priesthood, and holy nation;
Because the Lord has shed His grace,
So that He offers salvation.
The excellencies to proclaim,
Out of the darkness into the light;
Will be blessing you in His name,
Giving you spiritual insight.
As His people once you were not,
But now in belonging to Him;
And the mercy that you had sought,
Has given you spiritual vim.
So I urge you as the strangers,
Any exiles to abstain;
Of fleshy lusts of dangers,
For your soul that you must restrain.
Keep your conduct having honor,
Honesty in all that you speak;
Remembering as a fawner,
To glorify God what you seek.
