Take time to notice

During seasons when
passing showers start.
Storms arrive headlong
hard, dark and angry.

Silent rolling across the sky
Storms demand to be heard.
Crack of thunder and wind
shake you awake. You notice.

Next is white noise, static
numb repetition the downpour
wave after downpour of pelting.
Rain tries tap-tap you to sleep.

The storm's end is sudden
you strain, hear drain pipes
gurgle and play into places
where only rivers run free.

From here, it's all downhill
floods fill the low, slow places.
Overflow with murmur of gods
and promises made, two by two.

You want to alligator dance in the rain
but you are alone. No one there cares
to take your hands, to spin you around
backwards, when the fast parts start.

Stray drops run like your water drum.
high pitch, on empty backyard tables.
The sound takes you to soothing places
where thunderstorm rain, never mattered.
