No one can lay a foundation,
Laid other than by Jesus Christ;
Brick and mortar of salvation,
After He had been sacrificed.
Foundations of silver and gold,
Of precious stones, straw, hay, or wood;
Manifested as strong and bold,
Strengthened by a holy priesthood.
The work will become manifest,
For the day that will declare it;
Revealed by fire who confessed,
Through their faith as well as merit.
The fire tests what work was done,
And if their heart is in the Word;
Their foundation is in the Son,
Then he shall receive a reward.
If the work of one has been burned,
Then he is suffering the loss;
And salvation has not been earned,
Without any faith in the cross.
Merely he himself shall be saved,
Yet though through the test of fire;
Sinning has no longer enslaved,
By temptations of desire.
