DESTINATIONS - From There To Here and Here To There
HIDE AND SEEK
Where are you?
Are you hiding
Under the covers
Playing Peek-A-Boo
With little girl imagined monsters
Or tucked safely inside Daddy's arms
Where nothing
Could ever hurt you?
Of course not!
Those are the places
Little girls go
And everyone knows
That you're a big girl now.
Where are you?
Are you hiding
In front seats
Of 1965 Mustangs
Or in sleepovers with girlfriends
Laughing till way past
Midnight and hours
When other people are asleep
Or in the eyes of a new love
That you're sure will last
Forever?
Of course not!
There is no reason to hide
When you're young
And the world is still yours.
Where are you?
Are you hiding
In carpools
And swimming lessons
And doctors' visits
Or just behind
Your SuperMom cape?
Of course not!
The children are all grown up
Playing their own games now.
Where are you?
Are you hiding
In the refrigerator
Or in the shopping malls
Or any of the many places
You go to escape when pain gets too great
Because of a spouse's drinking
Because people you love die
And leave you behind
Because you feel like
No one understands
Or cares
Because you are just so tired
Of going it alone
And the love you were so sure
Would last forever
Is playing its own hiding game?
Of course not!
You left this place
Many tears ago and never looked back
Although, sometimes
The Mall still is
An easy place to hide
When you need to get lost
For awhile.
Where are you?
Oh, there you are!
It took time for me to find you
And sometimes I thought
You were lost
Forever.
There you are!
You're writing poetry again
For the first time
In a long time
And you're not hiding after all
Or anymore.
The old game is finished.
This time it's a new game
With your rules.
