The Broken Rainbow

THE BROKEN RAINBOW

Is that your horse? Why did you lie
Beneath a custard-coloured sky?
Why pretend when all along
You meant to sing a different song?
Why dance on roof-tops in the moon
While stirring with a different spoon?
Why wear your coyness on your sleeve
And hide your pride in Little Reeve?
Why build a bomb of daisy twine
And drop it on St Valentine?
A knife concealed behind a smile,
A rubber-fingered face beguile,
A scented letter sent to say
It's time to give the game away
And sealed with alligator tears.
Love's not blind to counted years.

It started in the butcher's shop.
You caught your bus.  I got the chop.
And did you shed a tear or laugh
When my rainbow simply snapped in half?
