THE RELUCTANT HERO
“My dad's bigger than your dad!”
I wish he hadn't said it –
The other kid's dad was raving mad
And bigger than you would credit.
He rolled his sleeves up, stood and scowled,
I didn't have much choice.
I put my dukes up as you do
And prayed in silent voice.
He got me with a smart left hook
But when he tried again
He missed and clobbered my brick wall
And hollered out in pain.
So while he clutched his stinging wrist,
I kicked him on the shin.
He doubled up and – don't know how –
My knee then hit his chin.
He staggered back in quite a daze,
While, braver I suppose,
I went up on my tiptoes
And punched him on the nose.
He'd had enough, he turned and fled,
My son looked very proud.
I can't tell what I said to him…..
It wouldn't be allowed.
