If only you and I were free,
And we could think of being "we"
And plan a future, not just dream.
If only it was in life's scheme!
If you were here or here was there
And all between us was fresh air
And, so together, we could touch
With no concern about how much,
And never have to dash away
To pine for such another day.
And we could fill each others' needs,
Unspoken words turn into deeds,
Our feelings fathomless, unchecked,
The joys of love to resurrect.
Why is it life is so unfair?
Two people with so much to share,
Yet shackled by these rusty chains
And tied to yesterday's remains,
For whom all future's truly past,
Lashed to a storm-embattered mast,
Forever heading out to sea
Away from what will never be.
If only what we have was built
On love alone without the guilt,
I'd be your Adam, you my Eve,
And Eden we would never leave.
If only. Well, at least it seems
They'll never take away our dreams.
