As though it knew, the sun went out of view,
The vicar closed his book with solemn face
Friends and fam'ly said their last adieu,
The coffin lowered to its resting place.
And from a distance I stood looking on,
Anonymous outsider looking in,
In secret grief. The one I loved had gone,
And buried with her one forgiven sin.
They cried and hugged each other, young and old,
Then slowly walked to cars that stood in line,
Their only thing in mind if truth be told
A table laid with cheesy snacks and wine.
A tear rolled down my cheek. I stood a while,
Remembered, turned and left there with a smile.
