THE WAY WE WERE
We are what we are,
What fate decreed.
We're not the action,
Not the deed.
We aspired, fate decided.
Hopes ignored, desires derided.
Fate made wrong and fate made right
And mixed them up, created spite.
What we were was never clear.
What we were has left us here.
Fate made sure that we have seen
What we thought we might have been.
What we were was in the mind
And even fate with schemes unkind
Could never quite take that away
And what we were we are today.
The truth still hurts but I prefer
To think about the way we ware
It wasn't right but what was wrong -
We weren't the way we were for long.
