POETRY IN MOTION

YOU RAISED ME UP

You raised me up to follow you and lead the way that in my day
I'd preach and practice, practice, preach
And with my people reach the valley of perfection.
Peace and love for fellow man
Would span a generation.
Now I must for the last time rise and bid farewell
Tears and cheers today will echo for I must withdraw.
You raised me up so I could earn
A passage to the happy hunting ground
By way of the river of no return.
Now you must raise another son
To carry on what we have done
And I must hand this borrowed land
To those in line who understand
The laws of life and co-existence.
Time moves on and life stands still
While generations do your will.
And from a distance by your side
I can look back, reflect with pride
That we at least have heard your word.
You and I have formed a nation
Free of man's degeneration.
You raised me up, you raised the sun,
The sun whose work is never done.
You gave me time, you gave me tools,
You helped me chisel out the rules.
Between us we've done what we can.
It's now, I fear, all down to man.
