POETRY IN MOTION

The Hole In The Wall

He got eight draws on the football pools and suddenly was rich
In those days £75,000 was beyond most people's dreams and now he could afford to do that for which he'd always had an itch.
He paid off all his debts, made sure his friends and family were ok,
Then did what he'd always wanted and moved to the USA.
He rented a flat in New York as his base
While he looked around for a permanent place
And one day he was strolling down the street window shopping
When he noticed an unusual sight: men kept stopping
And pressing themselves against a hole in the wall;
He'd never heard of anything like this as far as he could recall
And of course he wondered why,
Several people stopped and did it then casually passed on by.
He thought that maybe it was some sort of initiation thing in which first-time visitors to New York had to participate,
And if that was so, he further thought, he had better indulge before it was too late.
So he walked up to the hole and looking round and feeling rather sheepish,
And noticing that it cost ten dollars which he thought was rather steepish,
he put some coins into the slot
Then did the necessary with his you-know-what.
He heard a whirring noise and then a click and felt a rather excruciating pain.
Then it was over and he thought thank goodness! I'm never going to do that again.

This is quite a long story which is why I decided not to write a sonnet.
And the last line is he then realised what the machine was for and why those people did what they did - because when he looked down he saw it had a button sewn on it.
