Cough Pillow

Let me hold you like a lover,
let me hold you to my chest,
the pain is so awful,
I almost wish that I was dead.

Sometimes you help,
most times you do not.
I hold you so close,
and I cough all I've got.

Oh God please, please help me,
the feeling is dreadful,
I give all that I've got,
but I just can't cough it up.
The night is so long.

You are my comfort now,
you are my friend.
Only cloth and paper,
but you give me all that you've got.

I watched as the nurse created you,
only paper and cloth.
In a week or two,
you will be in flames,
but I really need you now,
and in my heart you will remain.

I hold you like a lover,
as I try to cough my name.
