Poetic-Verses from ATHANASE
Vew of Delft (English)
to Hendrick Terbruggen
This serene Delft sky, this gilded light
sweetly shaking off the shadows of the clouds,
suddenly halting its sweeping journey
on roofs numb with blood on roofs of igneous blue.
My soul, I know the essence of this sublime brightness
the intimate arrangement of the water's folds, trembling, reflecting
the transparent walls and the burning solidity
of the pink and yellow sand, the bronze trees.
And these bell towers dreaming intensely of eternity
in a silence that binds what lives to the excellence
of these human figures, frozen in the elegance
of a never completed dream, with the purity of heraldry!
This world that unhurriedly speaks its visions and its grandeur
like a limpid poem sprung from the rocks of the heart!
Translated from the French of Athanase Vantchev de Thracy by Norton Hodges
