(This is a true story about my Dad and I
and the memories that I had with him
when I was a small fellow going fishing with him for the very first time.)
One of my favorite memories with my Dad
were at the fishing hole by the pier
I was very young at the time
and I was about three years old
and a little bitty fellow back then
And this would be the very first time
that I went fishing at the fishing hole
And it was also the first time
that I was big enough to go
with my Dad instead of having to stay
home with Mom that day
I remember getting out of my dads truck really early one morning
holding my first fishing rod in one hand and a tackle box in the other
as I was walking towards the fishing hole with my Dad
Dad brought the net just in case we would have needed it
and he brought the bait too
At the time I really didn't understand
the whole concept of going fishing
Because in my mind way back then
we could have just gone to the store
and bought our fish there
But Dad told me there was more
excitement catching your own fish
Boy was he right
On that particular day
we arrived to dads secret place
And I can still remember standing there on the pier
with my Dad holding my first rod and reel
with a fishing line out in the water
It was really foggy and it was raining too
at the fishing hole on that very early morning
with my Dad as we stood out on the pier
And I can still remember our surroundings at the time
being very mysterious to me and kind of creepy
as we were standing there in a haze
But Dad said the fog and the rain
would go away and he was right
it did go away
The sun finally did come out and it wasn't to hot
on that early spring morning
Dad gave me a few pointers to remind me
that when we talked while we were fishing
that is was a good idea to whisper
And at the time I really didn't
understand why but I listened to him
and when ever I needed to talk to him I whispered to him
when we talked
Dad finally did explain to me
the reason we had to be so quiet
because if we didn't whisper
the fish wouldn't bite
because we would scare them away
by talking way to loud
So we continued to whisper
and spent Dad and son time
as we laughed together
Dad told me to keep an eye on the red and white floating ball
that was on the fishing line on top of the fishing hole
So I did
He also told me that if my fishing line
started to move back and forth
to let him know right away
because we had some
fish to catch that day
and after we caught some fish
that we were going to have a fish fry
We both stood there what seemed like the longest time to me
with our fishing rods in our hands reeling our fishing line in
just a little bit at a time to see if we could capture any interest
from the fish that day
We both continued to remain
as quiet as we could be
But It wasn't very long after that
when I noticed my fishing line started shaking
And that's when Dad looked over at me and I looked at him
with a big smile on my face
And that's when Dad told me to start reeling the line in
just a little bit at a time and to hold my fishing pole real tight
Because if I didn't I could loose the fish
or even worse I could fall in the water
My Dad sure was really proud of me that day
He did help me reel in the line
and then I could see the fishes tail
wiggling back and forth
in the water and when dad finally got the fish out of the water
I couldn't believe how big it was
I was so excited that morning you should have seen me
jumping up and down and smiling at my Dad
that day because I had just caught
my very first fish ever
That is when I realized how special that day was
with my Dad
And just how much I really enjoyed
the thrill of the catch
At the time I was only three
years old and I didn't
really understand it all
But after awhile I could see why we were at the pier
on that early spring morning
I will never forget going fishing with my Dad that day
And wouldn't you know from that day on every weekend that we had together
was a son and Dad day at the fishing hole by the pier.
