The Civil War
To those who fought and died to set our Nation free, I salute you. May such a thing never happen again.
They came that day
each side certain they would claim victory.
One side fought to keep ownership
the opposing force fought to set men free.
Both forces felt justified
and seemed clearly in the right.
As often when issues are not resolved
now became their time to stop and fight.
There amid the rolling fields
and lush green flower covered glades
They primed their cannons
their guns and attached the blades.
Somewhere in the distance
came the trumpet's eerie blare.
Flags flew high that day
and fell as quickly in smoke filled air.
A nation once united
now was divided into two
Sorrow etched on each face
of soldiers dressed in gray and blue.
Brother against brother
all filled with anguish and wrath.
The cry of the dying
in sweet victory's aftermath.
So many souls lost
all in the wake of a philosophy.
A scar upon the pages
of this great nation's history.
Solemn silence hangs
over the graves at Gettysburg and Shiloh.
and a nation once at war
has laid down its arms in new fallen snow.
Cry for the fallen
and thank God for those still left alive.
Pray always please remember
a nation divided among itself cannot survive.
