Old man Joe's place

When I was around eleven years old
me and all the kids in the neighborhood
were warned about old man Joe's place

Because he had
a bunch of vicious dogs
that were known to hurt
some of the kids in the neighborhood

His land was surrounded
by a huge lime brick wall
and this is what separated
the town that we lived in
from his house and the rest of us

And unless you climbed up on top of the wall
you wouldn't't be able to see his place
but you could always hear his dogs
and you could tell
that there weren't just one or two of them

There had to be at least ten of them
and we could all tell
by the sounds of the dogs barking
that they were really big dogs
and this actually scared the hell out of all of us

One afternoon when school got out
me and all the other kids got together
and we would all talk about
jumping over the wall at old man Joe's place

We were all  really bored that day
so we all decided that
this was going to be the day
when we  would all finally get the courage up
to climb up on top of the wall
and we all did what we never thought
we would do together
because we were all going to jump
over the wall with each other
at old man Joe's place

And one by one we all jumped over the wall together
and we were all so nervous and scared
because all we could think about
was all of his dogs catching up to us and hurting us

But we all  still did it anyway on a dare
and once we got to the other side of the wall
we all jumped down off the wall together
one by one watching over each others shoulders
and you could tell that we were all scared out of our minds

But once we all made it to over
to the other side of the wall
we all ran as fast as we could
across to the other side
of his land where there was
another lime brick wall
that we had to climb up on
and then jump over  to a place
where we knew we would be safe

And that's all we could all think about
was getting over to the other side

For some reason we all made it safely
across to the other side
and none of the dogs
were around that day
and we were all still alive

All the dogs must have been
inside the house that day

So we were the lucky ones
who dared to cross old mans Joe's place
and still be alive to talk about it.

I felt like we all had guardian angels
looking over our shoulders that day

And I honestly think that
that is the only reason why
we made it across
old man Joe's place that day
without one single dog in sight.
