The Wild Places
Life in the cities is not for me,
I seek a place that is wild and free.
A land of wild things is my dream,
where I can see the stars because the air is clean.
A grassy place where the deer fawn lies,
where eagles soar in vast, uncharted skies.
Where gray wolves hunt in the forests at night,
guided by the moon's cool, pale light.
Over to the lakes where the heron feeds,
as the ducks swim about the long, tall reeds.
To the vast prairies where the buffalo run,
beneath the golden light of the sun.
Where the hawks and falcons always nest,
while below the elk and moose herds stop to rest.
A place where the mountains rise up high,
their tall peaks hidden in the cloud-shrouded sky.
The land where the cougar pads through the trees,
while the mice scamper about in the fallen leaves.
Where the sky turns red with the coming of dawn,
and all the animals awake with a yawn.
Where the bear cubs and river otters play,
in the fresh air and light of every new day.
The wild places are beginning to fade from the Earth,
because many humans no longer see their worth.
Ah, but these are the lands I want to see,
these are the places I want to be.
The wild places call to me,
for these are the lands of the truly free.
