Under a stormy gray sky
waves crashed upon the rocks
and slid up the sandy beach.
The ocean rocked and heaved,
as if in pain, sending the
white-crested waves still higher.
Thunder rumbled in the distance,
and lighting flashed far off.
And then the sea horse came...
It rose like a wave from the
water, sending sea-spray flying.
Its mane and tail flowed like
silver rivers behind it and
its coat glistened wetly.
Then the sun broke through the
clouds and shone down upon it,
making it look even more beautiful.
It shook its head and the sunlight
reflected off the million water
drops cast away, turning them
into shining diamonds.
It reared, its hooves pawing the
salty air and its whinny was answered
by the rumble of distant thunder.
Then it galloped down the beach,
kicking up clods of sand and
shattering shells, bucking and
tossing its elegant head.
The wind whipped back its mane
and tail as the surf broke over
its long, powerful legs.
At last it stood still, facing
the churning sea, looking at
something I could not see.
Then it reared once more and
plunged back into the water
and the oncoming waves parted
before it, leaving the way open.
It disappeared beneath the surface
and the last I saw of it was its
spiraled horn sticking up like
a lone spear before the vast
ocean swallowed it and the
sea horse was gone.
