Most of the animals now bored walked on their
way. Holmes, Sally and a baby Cougar cub wanted
to play. The kids would come back but it had
to be continued another day. For on this side
too the skies were turning black and Grey. The
wise old Owl said, "Children you must be on your
way. My friend Katie the black widow will show
you the way."
Before they could go a limb began to sway. And
there the dangerous Python who ate children
had this to say, "I assure you no human adults
dare come this way. For I have been hanging around
here most of the day." The eye so evil began to play,
"Are you here to eat us the children did say?"
And in a strange grinning way, "Not dear ones if
you hurry on your way."
The truth is now told. On the other side of the
waterfall are animal friends who unmannerly children
do scold. Eating children was only made up to add
some spice. For most animals treated well are really
nice. As they left most all the animals stayed to wave.
As their friend the spider led them through and beyond
the cave. But their new friend the Spider had one thing
to say, "Never children lead your parents this way."
For nothing I write well be believed by parents it seems.
For the case is closed only in a child's dreams.
In the morning, sure enough, all the children will be
safely in their bed. For most that they'd seen came
from stories their parents had read. Even now as an
adult occasionally I go back and look. In the waterfall
under Shadow mountain in a pool just above Cottage Lake
brook.
