Time was when the moon shone
And happiness was mine
Sitting, legs swinging over the window sill
Watching the stars twinkle
Pinpricks stabbed through the velvet night sky
Listening to owls hooting, hushed
in the evening's cotton wool silence
the low drone of distant cars rushed
feeling content,
fulfilled, calm, peaceful,
yet melancholy enfolds me
there's an emptiness within
as my thoughts swing round to you
the surge of welling emotion
that icy coldness as the wave hits
overwhelmed, needing to cry,
Release.
I see your window in mind's eye
wonder what is it that you do
are you sleeping?
Dreaming?
Or lying there with thoughts of your own?
Stretched out on your bed
I see you in my memory recalled
Staring at the ceiling
With thoughts racing through your head
What is it that you dream of now
What fires your mind
Where is it you go at night?
Are your dreams filled with memories
The same as mine?
Now our paths are no longer joined
East to west.
North to south
Opposite ends of the magnet
Yet the pull is still so strong
What is it which holds me
Locked within your mind
Are our silver chords braided
Spilt out across the night
Twisting, twirling
Entwined
Tied too tight
The memories overtake me
Choking my ability to swim
Against the blackness of the tide
I want to run, hide
But I have to live this
I must bring it to the fore
Because you are here
For ever more
So much a part of me
I can't let it go
To do so would destroy
Something too precious
And so you sit within a place
Buried deep
And yet it surfaces often
Leaving me swept off my feet
Overwhelmed,
Suffocating in the moments
Of memories
Of what could have been
If only we could reach out
And touch
The inbetween!
