 Storm Girl

The afternoon sky is gray,
Torn again and again
By white claws of lightning
That rip open the swollen clouds
That pour forth torrents of rain
That fall like a million tears
Upon the parched and thirsty land,
Giving life both beast and bird,
Sparse flower and withered tree,
And upon a nameless girl
That stands alone in the storm,
Her chocolate-skinned hands cupped,
Filled with the blood of Heaven.
Her dark face is uplifted,
Her sightless eyes gazing up
At the titanic battle above,
Wondering if God is at war
As the thunder sounds within her,
As the lightning strikes all about her
And the wet wind whips back her hair
Until it streams behind her
Like a running stallion's tail.
As she stands alone in the raging storm
Seeing nothing but feeling everything.
