Who tied my hands
To the wheel?
Who bound my wrists
To the rudder?
They kept their faces hidden
But I knew them all.
Each one a loved one.
Each one a betrayer.
They dragged me from the woods
From my strange dream
Which they couldn't understand
And placed me on a ship
That would bare me
Into the "real" dream,
The only dream they knew.
Go make something of yourself
They told me
As they set the forests ablaze
So I couldn't return.
You do not belong there
They said.
Sail away and do
What all of us have done.
Stop living in a worthless dream.
Stop reminding us
That we too used to dream
Different dreams.
Go where you will,
Do what you wish.
(You live in a free country after all)
Put your back to the wheel.
Get paid, get fed.
Become another cog in the Machine
Like everyone else.
But if you should turn the ship
All the way around
And try to return
To the reality you once knew
You will be dashed to death
Upon the sharp rocks
That now guard your mind
Against fruitless dreams.
So they said this to me,
As they made me drink deep
Their cup of bitter wine,
A cruel antidote
For my wayward mind.
Then the wind caught the sails,
Taking me away forever
From wolf and wood
And many a unfinished poem
Into a world I knew
Was never meant for me.
