 The Gift

You said that you wanted
To leave me something
After you'd gone
But the furniture's broken
The car needs repair
The pictures are faded
The books are torn
The records are scratched
And the carpets worn
No money to speak of
The gas bill is due

So what have you left me
To remember you by
The way that you laughed
The tears that you cried
The times we got drunk
Drinking cheap wine all night
Yes
This is the best gift
That you've given me
The memory of you
And the love that we shared
