Visions

St. Oswald of Northumbria

Son of Ethelfrith,
brought to the True Light
by Irish Monks of Iona,
defeating Caedwallon at Heavenfield,
he assumed the throne of Northumbria.
Iona, Gor's light rising from the sea,
sent Bishop Aidan, the Lord's man,
to establish faith all over again
in the north of England.
Oswald himself took part
in the ministryof evangelism.
Thogh he was defeated and killed
near the Welsh border,
this holy movement went on
to build and extend
the work of Christ
through out Oswald's kingdom.
Saint and martyr,
valiant against the enemy,
humble before the Almighty,
set apart for service,
sealing his witness with his own blood.
In the eyes of the unrighteous
he seemed to die.
Ah! So precious in Thy sight, oh Lord,
is the blood of Thy saints!
Hoe sweet the odor of sanctity
and the blessed , reflected
light of tradition
giving many a saint
a life beyond life,
shining like a beacon
of glorious guidance to
lost souls seeking salvation!
Oh! Eternal beauty, Lord,
ever ancient yet ever new
shine in our hearts
and make us set apart for Thee!
