THE POET'S KISS

What is a Poet? I asked myself--
While I was resting like an old
book on the shelf.
Oh, he's a teller of
inward things,
He's the One who makes
words sing, I told myself.
That's not all a Poet is,
I heard another part of
me respond --
He's laughter, tears, joy and
fears and much more beyond;
He's everything that makes
us think
Those thoughts he
gives somehow lives
And makes us drink
From what he gives.

A deeper part of me said,
Even when the Poet is gone
We tenaciously hang on
To each thought his word
does artfully twist
From our mind and heart--
But alas, Such is the Poet's Kiss!
